Description and notes:
Mitchell Park, best known for its Horticultural Conservatory ("the Domes"), located at 524 Layton Boulevard, is former parkland that has been converted to agricultural use. The exotic plants in the Domes have long since been plowed under; they are now used to protect crops that are especially fragile or difficult to grow. Efforts are underway by tinkers to get the climate-control machinery for the Tropical Dome working again in hopes of making it suitable for crops that can't be grown in Wisconsin; success has been elusive, but the hope of one day reclaiming such almost-forgotten delicacies as chocolate and coffee keeps them on the job. The rest of the park is used for the farming of more traditional local crops. The pavilion building is home to the few farmers who live on site (and occasionally a tinker or two from the Dome project as a guest). Most of those who work this field live off-site, but within walking distance.
